If you ever find yourself in Taipei, Taiwan, you’ll see a rather famous chain of dessert and drink style restaurants known as Meet Fresh. And now they have found their way across the Pacific Ocean in sunny Irvine, CA. Meet Fresh faced many challenges in opening a branch in the Diamond Jamboree Plaza, and one of those challenges was to find the optimal POS solution for a growing, popular business.

Who is Meet Fresh?

If you visit Taipei, you will see these stores very often. A popular dessert and drinks shop, specializing in fresh (obviously) made desserts with a peculiar Asian flavor. They have been around a while and with the significant portion of the population in Irvine, CA being Taiwanese, they knew they had demand. Meet Fresh brought that familiar Taiwanese style shaved ice with various chewy and saucy ingredients such as taro or yam balls, soft peanuts, red beans, various types of jelly (similar to Jello), and many more. Demand for such treats is very high, and as already proven…customers show up and the lines are often out the door.

The Challenge

Knowing they would inevitably see long lines of hungry customers, Meet Fresh knew they needed a system that was not only reliable and efficient to handle the line of hungry patrons, but they really needed one to match the environment. Meet Fresh has a somewhat dark palette of colors for their image, and as such, they needed a POS solution to fit into that environment. They wanted it to be stylish; something that looked like it belongs there. They didn’t want a large system that invariably looked like a computer sitting there… it needed to be attractive. Additionally, they needed the peace of mind that they would not be calling servicemen out to repair it… downtime is income lost, and their system needed to not only be high performing and capable of running robust software, but also dependable and reliable enough that they knew it would respond immediately to commands, it wouldn’t freeze up, and it would optimize the order entry process.

The Solution

Meet Fresh chose the VariPOS 715 with a black on black color scheme for the frame and the cover. They also enjoy the option of changing the cover to a new color if they decide to give their POS image a facelift. The extraordinarily sturdy die-cast aluminum frame is not only stylish, but is also very effective at heat elimination and provides exceptional protection for the inner components. Effective heat elimination results in better performance, and consequently, peace of mind in knowing that their POS system is reliable.

Who is Half and Half Tea Express?

In 2008, Half and Half Tea Express had a dream of bringing authentic Taiwanese style specialty drinks and snacks to the good people of Los Angeles, CA. Six years later, that dream has been realized and has even expanded into six different locations. Half and Half has rapidly become a favorite for those looking to enjoy an authentic Taiwanese beverage.

Half and Half Tea Express was recently recognized as one of the Top 5 Boba Tea establishments in the region. Given the sheer amount of competition in this locale, this is no small feat. As a result of this popularity, Half and Half took a long hard look at how they could improve their store’s customer service; increasing their efficiency, while maintaining the high quality they have always offered.

Their Challenge

Half and Half was not surprised at how popular they had become, but they knew it was time to find more ways to improve their business. As their popularity increased, lines were getting longer. They needed to approach this with care, because quality is Number 1 in their view and it is not negotiable. In addition to improving customer service, Half and Half wanted to make sure whatever decision they made, that it would fit in with their image.

After weighing their options they settled on trying an updated POS system. They needed a POS system that would not only provide the efficiency and reliability they needed to shorten those lines, but would also match their shop’s atmosphere. They spoke with a POS professional and after testing the waters, they made their decision.

The Solution

In Taipei, Taiwan, there are many such establishments, and each one has a fantastic eye for detail. However, at present… one tea house stands out: HuiLiu Tea House (AKA: HuiLiu Japanese Style Tea Artistry).

HuiLIu is a celebrated, popular Japanese style tea house with a long history of excellence on the equally as famous Yong Kang Street (located in the Daan district of Taipei). Refined traditional décor including paper lamps, excellent (vegetarian) food & drink, a storefront reminiscent of an urban garden, and of course, the abundance of handmade ceramic art lining the walls are what really set HuiLiu apart. HuiLiu sees a steady stream of patrons throughout the day, for both their artwork and their cuisine.

What Was the Challenge?

HuiLiu was facing the challenge of maintaining an accurate inventory before they decided to upgrade their existing POS system. Previously, HuiLiu found that a simple machine was all they needed to checkout their customers, but as times evolved and workloads grew larger, they knew the best option was to have a machine do some of the work. From inventory maintenance, accounting, and even special software for previewing custom made ceramic artwork, HuiLiu opted for the VariPOS on a recommendation from a friend, who just happened to be a POS dealer and an expert in the field.

In addition to the effortless automated processes, VariPOS provides a wide range of benefits to HuiLiu. Not only is the touch screen fully capable of such tasks as order entry, but it is capable of such tasks as word processing. HuiLiu found that a keyboard would be more efficient for such activities, among other possibilities. Additionally, a receipt printer would be needed, as well as a standard cash drawer.

How Did This Benefit HuiLiu?

Given the theme of the restaurant (a black and brown, traditional, old-fashioned teahouse), HuiLiu knew that a machine as advanced and modern as VariPOS would be obvious in such an environment. Copenhagen Business School (CBS) is an institution of higher learning, specializing in a wide range of undergraduate and graduate business programs, all with an interdisciplinary and international focus. Currently, over 20,000 students and over 13,000 employees make CBS the second largest business school in Europe.

The challenge that CBS faced was to have a more efficient system of selecting and purchasing beverages, refreshments, etc. Additionally, the system needed to be automated, needed to be cashless with an option for cash, and needed to reflect a level of higher technology than just a standard traditional checkout procedure. Intensifying the challenge was the fact that they had never experimented with such a system and needed to ensure that it was, in fact, the optimal solution for their vision.

Their Challenge

Using their own instruction, CBS researched the challenge and how it would need to be implemented. The setup would require a self-service ordering and payment scheme. While self-service kiosks are generally common these days, their scheme demanded extra features, such as using their student ID to make the purchase, in addition to credit cards, cash, and “multi-tickets.” This would require the capability of reading a chip-and-PIN credit card, as well as a student ID card that allows for not only making automated purchases, but also allowing for the depositing of more funds onto the card. The process would involve the student taking the food, registering it in the system and printing their own receipt.

After consulting a local Point of Sale vendor and Poindus Partner, Michael, CBS discussed their vision and their requirements. Our partner went against traditional thinking, which would have included large kiosks and reduced the canteen’s walking area. Instead, using CBS’s vision, he proposed a solution that would automate an organized queue, while maximizing the space available in this particular room layout. His proposition included VariPOS as a self-service terminal. Students first receive their food items, then register the items with the self-service VariPOS units via barcode scanner, and print out the receipt. At this point, students are able to use a credit card or student ID to conclude their purchase. If the student uses cash, he/she must then take the receipt to a cashier operating another unit, complete with cash drawer and VFD to complete the transaction. In total, there are 6 locations with this design, for a total of 24 counters. Poindus and the VariPOS series have been a solid choice in every previous installation, and I knew it was the right choice for this one.”

The Results

With 4 VariPOS 715 units installed in various locations throughout campus, CBS was impressed with the reduced transaction times, creating a less crowded atmosphere for the students. CBS further elaborated that they were more than impressed with the style of the VariPOS units. They had envisioned the boxy, bulky POS units that most manufacturers produce. CBS administration felt that the style of the VariPOS units added a more modern appeal to the stations. They chose to go with the Black covers on Black frame to match any atmosphere. Lastly, the administration is already reporting higher sales in its first semester. Profit was not an important factor, but in the end, CBS staff felt they had exceeded their goal.

As for the students, hungry students were no longer waiting in extended lines to make a small purchase. Of particular interest is the student who said, “I don’t go to the coffee shop next to campus anymore, they take too long to take my order, and even longer to make it. The canteen at The School is much more efficient and just as tasty.”

VariPOS has assisted CBS in bringing a vision into a reality; A highly efficient canteen, providing their students with a practical solution to that mid-morning snack or much-needed beverage. And all of this done with a cashless option.

Who is Ducat Gold?

Located in the Heart of Taipei, Ducat Gold was established in 1999 and has been going strong ever since. Self-described as a Brunch and Dinner establishment, Ducat Gold is a popular Maritime-themed (sailors and pirates) restaurant serving a blend of American style cuisines; from unique breakfast sandwiches to the traditional bone-in pork chops with rice. Not only the menu featuring various breakfast items, appetizers, sandwiches & burgers, pasta and steaks; not to mention the extensive drink menu including coffee, mixed drinks, smoothies, sodas, and more, Ducat Gold provides options for everyone.

What are their Challenges and Solutions?

Being such a popular place, Ducat Gold is in demand and welcomes walk-in visitors; however, they recommend a reservation in order to by-pass less-than-ideal wait times. As part of their purpose, they would like to optimize the reservation system, seating charts, and so forth. Additionally, given the popularity, they need to keep accurate track of inventory.

As for visibility requirements, the theme of Ducat Gold isn’t most suitable for having a visible POS System, therefore introducing a POS system to the environment would not be ideal. Further, the floor plan is spacious; however, Ducat Gold does not want to use valuable floor space for this purpose, nor do they want to limit access to the machine… if must remain easily accessed by the staff so they can remain efficient.

Regarding the hardware itself, Ducat Gold boasts a very popular reputation. Given the likelihood that this machine will often be in use, a point of sale unit must be reliable and capable of performing advanced operations quickly. Further, the environment allows for various types of accidents, from liquid spills to accidental bumping. The machine must be safe from such accidents, as well as durable and strong.

How did this benefit Ducat Gold?

When Ducat Gold decided to pursue a new POS System, they identified the need to not just replace their existing system, but they needed a significant upgrade.
